The Thayer's gull is a rare winter specialty in the Ottawa region.  They are very similar in appearance to ring-billed gulls, but there are a few field markers to look for that can help make an identification.

Firstly, Thayer's are larger than ring-billed gulls, but not as large as American herring gulls.  Thayer's have pink feet in all plumages and ages, whereas only first-year (1cy) ring-billed gulls have pink legs.  The grey mantle or back on a Thayer's is lighter than a typical ring-billed gull.  Lastly, the white crescent formed by the leading edge of the scapulars on the back of a Thayer's gull is more pronounced than on a ring-billed gull.
