SmugMug > keywords > homeless > I stopped for gas on the way home. As I was leaving the gas station, I spotted this lady sitting by her shopping cart. Our eyes locked and I almost missed my turn. I rode home, got my camera, and rode back the Circle K. I parked by bike and nervously walk over towards the woman.
She watched me, carefully, as I approached. I extended my hand and said "Hi, My name is John"
She confidently said "I'm Jackson"
Me: "Can I ask you a crazy question?"
Jackson: "Go Ahead"
Me: "Can I take your picture? I'll give you ten bucks"
Jackson: "You Bet"
I placed the ten in her hand.
Me: "Where ya from?"
Jackson: "Everywhere"

I start carefully composing the shot, and her eyes have got me nervous. I can't hold the non-IS 50mm steady. I take a deep breath. Exhale and hold. 'Click' ..Got it

Me: "Where ya headed to?"
Jackson:"Needles... Needles New Mexico. I heard it's nice."
Me: "Yeah, San Francisco's not the friendliest place for....."(I didn't know what to say, I didn't want to offend, so I left it at that as I cleared my throat)
Me: "Do you drink?"
Jackson: "Only Beer"
Me: "If you want I could buy ya a six pack"
Jackson: "Nah.. I gotta stay sharp, but thanks for the cash"
Me: "Well, good luck"
Jackson: "You too"

I walked over to my bike, put my helmet on and started to cry. My lips were quivering as I rode passed her.
I waved. She waved back
As I rode home, I took stock in my health, my wife, and my wealth.
I thanked my god and felt humility and shame.

"It could always be worse" The old adage goes. But some of us have no Idea what "worse" is.
Enjoy life.

SmugMug > keywords > homeless > This is a Homeless passerby who stopped by for the ceremony, now heading off on his own. As I talked to him I didn't see much hope within him and our conversation reminded me of how hard it it is to pull yourself up when the world's beat you down.
