I love Hovland because it's the only North Shore community not blighted by condos and other kinds of development. You can still get a hint of what the North Shore was like in the old days. This is the town dock. Before Highway 61 was built in the 1920's, every community of any size on the North Shore had a dock like this for the package steamers and fish tugs to moor. This is the only one I know of that's still in reasonable shape. Most of the rest are gone or reduced to a few ruined rock and wood cribs. The concrete slabs in the middle-ground are part of a ruined boat ramp.

Wooden fish shacks, net reels, and wooden Mackinaw boats, like this one, were once common on the North Shore and Isle Royal. Mackinaw boats were originally sail powered. Engines were used in later years, changing them to gas boats. Power plants ranged from converted Model T and Buick engines to more expensive marine engines by Gray Marine and Red Wing.
