SmugMug > keywords > iceburg > Gullfoss (Golden Falls) is a massive waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.
It is is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward and 1km above the falls it turns sharply to the left and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages into a crevice 105 ft deep. The crevice is 60 ft wide, and 2.5 km in length, is at right angles to the flow of the river.

The part frozen falls took my breath away as I first approached. Spectacular is just not grand enough to describe it. I trust the pictures help. More great close ups of the crevice. Olympus E3, 12-60mm SWD.
SmugMug > keywords > iceburg > Skógafoss, is situated in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. The coastline has receded into the sea (it is now about 5 km from Skógar). The stunningly majestic cliffs lie parallel to the coast over hundreds of kilometers, creating together with some mountains a clear border between the Lowlands and the Highlands of Iceland.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls of the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days. Not whilst I was there mind!

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. A local boy found the chest years later, but was only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again......I never found it, but got some great images :) That person right at the base really shows the scale of this thing. SmugMug > keywords > iceburg > The fantastic huge geysers at Geysir and Strokkur. The Strokkur erupts every 5-10mins. Some explosions fill the sky whilst others rumble up much quiter. Fascinating to see the energy thrown up from these hot springs. Olympus E3, 7-14mm
