SmugMug > keywords > kco > Un-namned creek on eastern side of coastal range just off of Naciemento-Fergusson Rd., Big Sur, CA.  Moss is common in these shaded moist environments.
SmugMug > keywords > kco > Kangaroo Rat (in the genus Dipodomys) found at Kelso Dunes in Mojave National Preserve, CA.  There are 22 species of Kangaroo rats, many of which are only found in California deserts.  This native rat is unique in that it does not need to drink water to survive.  It extracts all the water it needs from the food it eats.  It further conservs water by not sweating or panting like other desert animals.
SmugMug > keywords > kco > Native Elephant Seals (Mirounga angustirostris) taken at the Elephant Seal overlook, San Simeon, CA.  These young seals have returned to the beach to go through a catastrophic molt, one where all the fur sheds in a short amount of time.  The typical age of the molting population is between 1-5 years.  Males will live to around 20 and females to about 30.
SmugMug > keywords > kco > Native Elephant Seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) taken at the Elephant Seal overlook, San Simeon, CA.  These young seals have been left behind by their mothers and fathers.  Once they get hungry they will go out into the ocean to feed and not return to land until around September.
