Seed pod of a black locust.  This species has wicked thorns, but deliciously fragrant blooms.  It can be invasive, but other native plants on this lakeside hill in SE Michigan seem to keep the sprouts, if any, in check.

I found this cicada out on the porch, I took pictures, he gave me a Big Mac, end of story.  Here's some more shots.
