Owl Woods, Amherst Island, Ontario
12 December 2008

Long-eared owls are a common, though often overlooked, species similar to the great horned owl, though much smaller.  Due to an abundance of meadow voles on the island, long-ears have been literally covering the Owl Woods.  My final count for the day was 19 individuals, of which only two allowed me more than a fleeting glimpse.  This male, paired with a female off-camera, was uncharacteristically calm and at ease with my presence.

Long-eared owls, like several other species of owl, contract their bodies when they are alarmed so that they can better hide against a tree trunk or large branch.  On the other hand, when relaxed they fluff out, as is seen here.
