I noticed the frames and mirror in a corridor of Hotel Taj Residency where we were staying when we had gone to Lucknow for the wedding of my grand nephew.

SmugMug > keywords > lucknow > Bada Imambada, Lucknow, India. The Bada Imambada was built by Asaf-ud-Daula in the year 1784. Its construction was a part of the famine relief project, where a number of labourers were appointed to build this Imambada. It is a huge vacant hall with a length of 50 m and a height of 15 m. Close to the Imambara is the Bhul Bhulaiya - an amazing maze that might need a tourist guide to get through. Long passages with viewing areas were used by soldiers to defend the structure.
SmugMug > keywords > lucknow > Bada Imambada which remains till date the most outstanding building in Lucknow, India. Built in 1784 by the erstwhile Nawab of Lucknow by employing 22,000 people to provide succor to the famine stricken people, yet the large halls, vaulted galleries, and an intriguing labyrinth of interconnected passages within it make it an amazing edifice. It is neither a mosque, nor a mausoleum, but shows a strong Islamic influence.

This passage that you see in this picture is just below the open terrace, approached through a narrow flight of steps (light at the end of the passage is the way up/down). But a level below is a maze of passages in which one can easily get lost for hours if not days.

This labyrinth of inter-connected passages called Bhul-bhulaiya (maze) is worth a visit.

The other intriguing aspect is the acoustics. Even the slightest whisper into the wall can be heard at the other end of the passage reconfirming even now the old adage "Walls have ears" therefore secrets should not be spoken. :-)

In reality its an acoustic engineering feat, par excellence.
