The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is having a calendar photo contest which ends in two days. I've submitted 40 or so images so far, but this one is my favorite. :-) Except for the flag having a lot more stars and the cupola being enclosed, it almost could have looked this way when the hotel was built in 1887.

Arch Rock, Mackinac Island, Michigan

From Wikipedia:

Arch Rock is a geologic formation on Mackinac Island in Michigan. It is a natural limestone arch formed during the Nipissing post-glacial period, a period of high Lake Huron levels following the end of the Wisconsin glaciation. To this day Arch Rock stands on the Lake Huron shoreline 146 feet (45 m) above the water.

Limestone breccia is not an ideal material for natural bridges, and this type of formation is quite rare in the North American Great Lakes region. The Native Americans saw Arch Rock as a place of numinous power, and told many stories and legends about it.

Euro-Americans did not share many of the taboos of their Native predecessors, and treated Arch Rock as a curiosity to be admired. Its presence was a major element in the decisions to create Mackinac National Park in 1875 and its successor, Mackinac Island State Park, in 1895. Arch Rock has been a part of the State Park ever since. Today Arch Rock is a focus of Mackinac Island tourism, and is seen by many visitors to the Island. A dedicated road, Arch Rock Road, follows a relatively straight route from Fort Mackinac to Arch Rock on the eastern shore of the Island.

Footnote by me -- despite its strong appearance, Arch Rock is slowly crumbling into Lake Michigan. Future generations may never see this stunning formation (which reminded me of Natural Bridge here in Virginia). Such a pity!

Took this shot on impulse, after asking the little girl's parents if it was okay. Taken at the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory in Michigan.

Not one to do much portrait-style work, and having snapped only one very quick shot, I'd like to know what y'all think of the DOF and angle. Thanks!

One more from the Wings of Mackinac Conservatory. This isn't as sharp as I'd like, but I couldn't resist the irony of a black and orange butterfly enjoying the fruits of an orange flower!

A furry specimen from the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory in Michigan. This one appears to be using his antennae as divining rods. :-)

Exotic butterfly at the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory. They didn't sit still long so I consider myself lucky to have photographed a handful of these beauties, of which there were many varieties.

Best seen large for the bonus pollen on his feet!

Wow -- what a surprise to see that my lighthouse photo from yesterday stayed at the top of Smugmug all day!! Thank you! With the abundance of incredible talent here on the site, I'm deeply honored and humbled by your accolades.

Hugs to all of you!

Round Island Lighthouse, as seen through the windows of the Grand Hotel's Cupola Bar.

This was my first experience with selective coloring.

Another of the many chandeliers from the Grand Hotel. This one hangs over the landing leading up to the Cupola Bar.

I'm not sure whether I like the composition of this shot or not...In retrospect, I probably could have removed the wall, leaving only the ceiling visible. I was in a hurry to take it, since the landing is small and there were people constantly coming and going on the stairs. This is altered a bit to remove a few intersecting roof lines which were visible through the round window, and darkened for a more candlelight effect.

A closeup of yesterday's chandelier from the Grand Hotel's Cupola Bar in Mackinac Island. You should've seen me leaning way out over that railing to get this shot, and then trying to remain steady while I pressed the shutter. LOL!

Some of the detail is evident in this size, but to really appreciate it, please view larger. This only a small portion of this 3-tiered chandelier.

UPDATE: Thanks to Tatiana, I was able to locate several similar chandeliers in an online designer catalog (for many thousands of dollars!). Thank you for helping me identify this! And DakotaCowboy, thanks for the link to the Mackinac Island blog. Love it!
