Thanks for all the wonderful comments on yesterdays Hot Springs Terrace shot.

Here is a view of Mammoth from the top of the terraces. We stayed in the cabins on the far left. The red buildings on the right were part of Fort Yellowstone. The army was there from 1886-1918 (and being posted there was considered a prized assignment, despite the harsh winters).

From Wikipedia
Fort Yellowstone is a former United States Army base that currently serves as the administrative headquarters for the Yellowstone National Park.

The Army spent thirty-two years running Yellowstone National Park, the longest period the army ran any national park in United States history.
Fort Yellowstone is also noted by conservationists to have helped define how national parks were to be managed. During its thirty-two years at Yellowstone, the army developed regulations that put much emphasis on conservation. Under the watchful eyes of the army at Fort Yellowstone, the features and wildlife of Yellowstone National Park were protected from vandalism and extinction. In fact, many of the policies initiated by the army at Fort Yellowstone were later adopted by the National Park Service.
In addition, the hats used by the National Park Service rangers (Ranger Stetsons) are descended from the hats originally used in Army uniforms

This was shot 4 hours after yesterdays posted photo. We were walking to dinner and I only had my point and shoot. I should have been out shooting instead of thinking about eating. The light was wonderful as a crisp cold evening approached. The fresh snow in the background had accumulated during this days weather cycle.

The orginal Army Post buildings (built 1891-1909) are in excellent repair and in use by the National Park Service. I took shots of several informational signs when I went on the self-guided tour that give a nice photo and textual history of the post. They can be viewed at
