Temple Wash Townsite, Utah, 2009
SmugMug > keywords > mining > These cabins are scattered, often in small groups (probably villages or mining camps), all along the route up to Goose Lake (and other places in the mountains around Red River). Each has a story. Each is a mystery.
SmugMug > keywords > mining > The Great Laxey Mine - photographed on May 03, 2004.: The “Lady Isabella” waterwheel was constructed in 1854 to pump water from the mineshaft and named in honour of the wife of the then Lieutenant Governor Hope.
The Laxey Wheel is the largest working waterwheel in the world .

Water from the surrounding area, including the local river, is collected in a cistern located above the top level of the wheel cistern this is connected to the tower by pieline up which the water is forced into the wooden launder at the top of the wheel above which a walkway was constructed.

The water falls from the launder onto the back of the wheel (pitch back) and thus causes the wheel to rotate. The crank connected ot the axel is connected to flat rods which run along a stone viaduct to the pumping shaft where a “T” rocker converts the reciprocating sideways motion into an up and down motion to operate the pump rod in the mine shaft.

Since the mine closed in 1929 the wheel has been preserved as a tourist attraction and celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2004. The mine site is now in the care of Manx National Heritage and visitors can climb to the top of the wheel, follow the miners’ trail around other mining remains and inspect a short section of adit..
