I got no opinion about this one. That's reason enough to post it.

There's a bit of history behind this bridge. The first span at this location was built in 1867 by the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. (The StP&P ultimately became the Great Northern Railroad.) The Great Northern replaced that bridge in 1893, then improved it 1926. The GN modified the bridge with this truss in 1963. I have several other views of this bridge with trains. This image is looking south from Nicollet Island toward downtown.

This view is looking downstream past the lower lock gate for Lock and Dam Number 4 in Alma, Wisconsin. The dam was completed in 1937. The two stacks in the distance belong to a couple of power plants. The locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi are doing a fine job of killing the river. But they do make for good photo subjects.

Red Wing isn't all that large a community, but it has a busy frontage on the Mississippi River.

This swing bridge was built by the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railroad in 1915. It's currently shared by the Union Pacific and Soo Line (Canadian Pacific) Railroads. The design is unique. Because the pivot is so close to shore, one end of the span is much longer than the other. The shorter end is counterbalanced by cement weights.

If you have to work on a Saturday, then a brilliantly sunny autumn morning on the river might be the best way to do it. Or so it seems to me.

I took this from Harriet Island Park. It's across the river from downtown.

From front to back, the bridges are: New 35W Bridge, Tenth Avenue Bridge, Northern Pacific Railroad Bridge
