SmugMug > keywords > mollusk > This prickly cockle, Acanthocardia echinata, was washed up on the beach in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast after eastly winds.  The animal was collected and photographed on 13 January 2005.  Identification was made by Jan Light of the British Conchology Society.

SmugMug > keywords > mollusk > The eye of an abalone or ormer, Haliotis tuberculata, peering out from under its shell.  The mantle is fringed with green tentacles. Guernsey ormers are a seafood delicacy.  Recreational harvesters gather them from the shore during daylight hours during the days of the new or full moon and the two days following during the first four months of the year. All ormers must have a shell length of at least 80 mm to be retained.

SmugMug > keywords > mollusk > This live fan mussel or pen shell, Atrina fragilis, was accidentally trawled up from the bottom near Hanois lighthouse on Guernsey's south-west coast on February 18, 1998. It was caught about six miles to the west of Hanois Lighthouse, south-west coast of Guernsey (about 49 degrees 26 minutes and 2 degrees 51.30 minutes west).  The fan mussel weighed 85 grams.  It had a total length of 19.0 cm and a maximum valve width of 8.06 cm.  The maximum thickness of the two valves of the live animal was 30.85 mm.

SmugMug > keywords > mollusk > The carnivorous Arctic cowrie, Trivia arctica, is common on the pontoons in the Queen Elizabeth 2 marina, St. Peter Port harbour, Guernsey.  It feeds on compound sea squirts (ascidians) which grow profusely on the pontoons and attached kelp fronds. Photographed on 19 September 2005
