Such is the economy that some Lakers never came out of winter lay-up this spring. The American Victory (background, far left) and the Kaye E. Barker (right) are still moored at the Fraser Shipyards. They're both beginning to look a little scabrous.

The Ryerson fitted out this spring (2009) and made a few trips. Then she went back into lay-up at the Fraser Shipyards. The Saint Clair can be seen behind the Ryerson. She never came out of winter lay-up this year. By the bye, those holes at the Ryerson's bow are for the bow thrusters.

The Gott had made the turn from the Ship Canal into the Outer Harbor when she bogged down in ice. The Alder went to work. Later in the day, the Gott hit the side the pier while entering her lay-up berth. Pier and ship suffered minor damage.

The Alder is a 225 foot Buoy Tender, launched in 2004. She can cut through 14 inches of ice at 3 knots and bust ice up to 3 feet thick by ramming. For more information: http://www.uscg.mil/d9/cgcAlder/

After clearing the Canal, ships have to make a turn to port before continuing into the harbor. The Gott is making that turn in the photo. Clouds of frost smoke erupt from open water in her wake.

The Edwin H. Gott was launched in 1978 and is 1004 feet long. For more information: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/gott.htm

These 1000 foot lake boats were designed to fit the Poe Lock at the Soo. They are massive, powerful, and slightly less pretty than a cement block. But when they loom out of frost smoke, they're very impressive and even mysterious.

The locks at Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Ontario, closed for the season on Thursday, January 15. The Edgar B. Speer and Edwin H. Gott were the last Lakers to arrive in Duluth for winter lay-up on Friday, January 16, 2009. They had quite a fight with ice and arrived better than two days late.

The Speer's stern superstructure was almost obscured by the clouds of frost smoke. The steam came from water opened by her passage.
