SmugMug > keywords > padlock > July 7th, 2008 Keys to Insanity This is the collection on which the vintage tins are displayed. Once again, there's another intriguing story to go with the subject matter. Mark's father worked as an electrician at the Cleveland State Mental Hospital (not sure of its original name) back during the 50's and 60's. Mark said he used to go with his dad to work occasionally and it was worse than any movie you could imagine -- the screams and moans and over-medicated patients wandering the halls was eerie. The building dated from at least the 1920's if not older, and these keys opened various doors throughout the hospital. On the bottom row is a heavy padlock with chain, which is partially visible in this photo. I often wonder if that was for the worst of the patients? Mark's father kept these after the hospital management changed the locks and doors to more modern entries. He displayed them in a very heavy shadow box which now hangs on our kitchen wall. It's certainly a conversation piece!
