These are Sugar Pine cones. Sugar pines are the tallest pine tree in the forest, growing up to 200 feet tall. The cones can grow up to 2 feet long. The middle cone in this picture is, in fact, 2 feet long with the stem. The Sugar Pines do not produce these cones every year, but this year there is an abundance of them.

On one other such abundant year, I went outside to do some watering and there, on my own property, was a woman gathering up my sugar pine cones as fast as she could pick them up, then she hurried to her car (which had the trunk open and the car motor running.) She would throw the cones in the trunk and then hurry back to gather more of them...looking furtively around as she dashed back and forth. I finally shouted out to her and she stopped and looked at me like she was a deer in someone's headlights. She said, "You don't mind if I take these do you?" As I opened my mouth to respond, she slammed the trunk closed, hopped in her waiting car and zoomed off down the road.

I found out later that these cones command about $10.00 EACH in the Bay Area.

Huh? We use them for kindling.

What would I have said if she had waited around? I would have warned her about the black widow spiders that sometimes like to make their nests in those cones.
