Somethings old

Today's challenge caused me to stop and look around at the things that I have to pass on to my children which hold family history. The quilt was pieced together by my grandmother 40-50 years ago and then quilted by my Aunt Pearl after grandmothers death. For most of my grandmother life she did several quilts a year and always gave one to the local orphanage. She and my grandfather in the three pictures above raised 7 of their own children plus several more belonging to others who were sick or passed away through the great depression. The photo in the center at the top are of them just before they married, he was sitting on one of the first Indian motorcycles, the picture on the left is one of them renewing their vows on their 50th anniversary. The picture obove the book is my brother sitting on our grandparents porch eating watermelon and the one on the right is me. The various pins are some that I gave to my grandmother in her lifetime and one that belonged to my mother. The card is the last birthday card I received from my grandparents when I was 10 years old and the watch was my very first watch. The crochet gloves belonged to my grandmother and I cherish them, the dog pin was a gift to me from a cousin when we were in our teens. The book Through the years with Katie was published by my grandmothers church after she and my grandfather had to move to Augusta to live with my Aunt Pearl and Uncle Myron. They took such great care of them for many years before they died. And through them a great history of love and care was passed down to us. Here is a poem that is in the book written in 1903 when she was 9 years old.

The Song of the Summer Rain

List to the song
Of the summer rain
As it falls on the mountain-
Sweeps over the plain.

"Tis sweet to live
For the country I love,
'Tis sweet to give
New life from above."

This is what it sang
As through the woods it rang.

"God! I love Thee.
Be with me and love me,
Wash me, make me pure within-
Help me to ne'er do wrong again."

1903 - 9 years old - for fifth grade assignment

Bringing out these items has given me pause to think about what I want to leave for my children and grandchildren - If I had to name one thing that my grandparents did that stands out is that they loved each other and were loving giving people whos love and dependence was on the Lord. Unpacking these things opened my eyes to how easy it is to fold things away to protect them and then we forget the memories. The quilt was in my mothers apartment but when she passed away I looked it but could not find it - I was heartbroken, but my neice came over and gave it to me and said that she had borrowed it, and was upset that she had used it badly and it needs great repair. I am the seamstress in the family so that task is mine. I am going to add a new spin on the old quilt. I am going to use family pictures that I scan and print on fabric to mend the torn blocks and so will add my love and prayers to this quilt that I know my grandmother and aunt both stitched and prayed over for this family. I am not putting the quilt back in the box that goes under the bed, I am keeping it out as a reminder to get busy on this. Time is fleeting.

Forgot to mention that I actually took the setting of Auto and used Aperture mode - Huge step for me - Lighting was the natural light I get in the morning.
