SmugMug > keywords > rhododendrons > 30.5.09 - May

Oh boy was it hard to pick the shots for this month's wildflower collage, there are just so many to choose from now, and more by the day. But some just had to be there, the oxide daisy, the wild rose, the buttercups, forget me nots and flag iris. The rhododendrons made the background as they were sufficiently different to most of the rest of the flowers, but I nearly used a bank of oxide daisies and a field of buttercups. This is getting really hard, but I'm enjoying the challenge and will definitely make it through the year, watch this space :)

Thanks for the kind words on yesterdays butterfly shot, they are still everywhere today and look so beautiful in the sunshine.

I spotted this bank of rhododendrons while I was on my run yesterday evening, so today I wanted to go back and photograph it. Unfortunately the sunshine has been replaced by a drizzly grey day, but if anything this has enhanced the colours.

If anyone would like to see my Monday Challenge shot it is here, and it is quite different :)

Skyward.

Today I ran around with all of my extension tubes attached to my 50mm “normal” lens. Since I have no flowers yet, I settled again on the leaf buds that are growing on my rhododendrons. The extension tubes make this lens behave more like a macro lens by allowing you to get closer to your subject. As with macro lenses, a smaller aperture is needed to maintain depth of field. But the bokeh remains nice because you’re so close to the subject.

Although I approached this subject from several angles, this was the best. This will be submitted to my close-up photography class.

I didn’t do much else today except to continue to chip away at a mountain of unprocessed photos. After finishing a big set today, I treated myself to a few episodes of Stargate SG-1 which is still good in season 8.

Ice Tomb.

Yesterday morning it was 57 degrees with rain. I noticed that my rhododendrons were busy pushing buds out for new leaves. (Or flowers?) I had never noticed this plant do this in December before. Usually the existing leaves contract and curl up for the winter (they do not drop).

36 hours later, it’s 30 degrees with freezing rain. Ice is covering everything. I still have power, but I don’t know for how long. I look forward to tomorrow in the daylight.

With very short days, I needed flash to get this shot. Luckily, the SB-600 is tough enough to withstand at least 30 minutes in the freezing rain. I protected the D700 with an umbrella, which was never in the way of the macro lens.

SmugMug > keywords > rhododendrons > 7.6.08 - Busy day today, and I only took 2 photos, so not a lot of choice for my DP. This is the first thing you see when you drive into Hartsholme Park car park, one of my favourite local places. What a place to put a sign :) No point going to the right, everything is left, and it really is a wonderful place. This photo was taken in pouring rain by the way.

This evening I've been at a gig, one of my favourite bands, Mostly Autumn. "Who?" I hear you all ask, well they are great, and they were on their usual brilliant form this evening despite poor sound in the venue. I saw lincolnsteve, and unlike me he had his camera, so look out for some great shots of the band. An evening of great music, great beer, good friends, what more can you ask? Goodnight :)
SmugMug > keywords > rhododendrons > June 4, 2008; Day 33. Please forgive a second rhododendron shot in a row, but I got even better conditions than yesterday: raindrops and fewer mosquitoes, in addition to overcast light and no wind!

Oliver suggested that I try the Orton technique with a single exposure where everything is in focus, then apply the Gaussian blur and blend them. This is what I got. The greens are WAY better than yesterday, and so is the flower. I had taken several bracketed exposures of this flower for HDR practice. The HDR wasn't so great (it flattened the flower too much). Not surprisingly perhaps, the most correctly exposed original was the best for Orton. (I used the Apply Image->Screen step to lighten the originals.)

Here’s the original photo.

Before applying the Orton technique:

SmugMug > keywords > rhododendrons > May 26, 2008; Day 24. No fun plans today…just laundry, chores, and the sorting and purging of hundreds of pictures from my vacation. I did step outside to enjoy the weather for a while, and noticed the bumble bees trying to pry open the flower buds on the rhododendrons. I hoped to catch one in action but didn’t get lucky. These will open soon and should be nicely fragrant over the next couple of weeks. I plan to get lucky with an insect/flower macro shot.
