I don't usually take photographs of doors. The doors at the Cathedral are so menacing, however, that I made an exception. True, I did attempt to heighten the effect, but not all that much. The real doors are pretty forbidding on their own.

I like the shadow-play on this one, especially around the windows and catwalk.

This swing bridge was built by the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Omaha Railroad in 1915. It's currently shared by the Union Pacific and Soo Line (Canadian Pacific) Railroads. The design is unique. Because the pivot is so close to shore, one end of the span is much longer than the other. The shorter end is counterbalanced by cement weights.

If you have to work on a Saturday, then a brilliantly sunny autumn morning on the river might be the best way to do it. Or so it seems to me.

I took this from Harriet Island Park. It's across the river from downtown.

This fellow was busking outside a building in Downtown Saint Paul. He was doing his part for the Art Crawl, but there weren't many people around. Even so, he had a big smile and played a sweet accordion.

Saint Paul is the historic head of navigation on the Mississippi River. A great deal of industry has flourished here. Most recently, there were several grain elevators and a coal-fired power plant along the city's waterfront. During harvest season, towboats and their barges would haul coal upriver for the power plant and take grain south. it was common to see several towboats moored at Lambert's Landing (aka The Lower Landing). The elevators are nearly all gone now. The coal-fired power plant was torn down this year (2009). So catching three towboats at the same time is a rare thing these days.
