As a photographer I'm inspired by beautiful landscapes, striking images, magical light, all the usual stuff. But there are other less tangible things such as history and the threads that connect places through time. I'm lucky to live in a beautiful old City that breathes history on every corner, and has more photo opps than you can shake a stick at. There had been people living in and around Lincoln for millennia before the Romans arrived, and this narrow street has witnessed so many things in it's time. The Romans marched through here two thousand years ago, on their way to the fort on top of the hill, a thousand years before the Cathedral was built.

I find it impossible to look at a scene like this without thinking of all those people, what they were doing, where they were going, and what they were thinking?

Now shoppers and tourists, and photographers on their way back to their car on a cold wet December evening, pass this way. I've taken this shot, or one very like it, many times before, but there is always something different so I never tire of it.

I went into town early this evening to take some shots of the temporary ice rink in the City Centre, but as usual couldn't resist taking a few more shots as I wandered around. This is just a view down the High Street. This is a shot from a short photo walk I did at dusk today. I decided to leave it as natural colour because of the blue tones running through it. We'd had a big storm this afternoon, and after it blew through the air was cold and very clear. I couldn't believe that the Christmas lights were already up in November, but they do make for a pretty shot!

Thanks to Mary Ann and everyone for the kind words on yesterday's black and white night shot. I'm glad your night shots are working out Mary Ann, it is a lot of fun doing these isn't it? I really hope to comment more myself this week. Now I've got the twins' birthday and various other projects out of the way things should calm down a little bit, until I have to start Christmas shopping anyway!

Some more shots from this evening are here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/CHRISTMAS-LIGHTS/10418872_wA9mz#722093968_yCpWB
SmugMug > keywords > shops > 20.11.09 - Window on the World

I'm afraid that this is another shot from yesterday, the view from the window of the pub. I've had a really long day today and didn't get chance to take any photos, but I relaxed this evening with a beer and a play in photoshop.

This is my "watercolour" treatment, which some always mistake for a form of HDR, but it is simply a manipulation of shadows, highlights and contrast. The oddest thing about this shot is the absence of people in the street, which is very unusual, but it happened so here it is.
SmugMug > keywords > shops > Once we parked in Pescadero we walked around the cute little town. I found this old wooden sign pointing towards a shop and thought that the texture was really neat.
SmugMug > keywords > shops > Stage Road Shops turned out to just be 1 small shop but I really liked the texture of the old wood building.
SmugMug > keywords > shops > 21.10.09 - Slippery When Wet

Today was wet and miserable, I should have checked the weather forecast before I decided to take it off! But, nothing ventured nothing gained, and when I did pick up my camera in the afternoon I had a pretty good photo walk despite the rain. The full gallery is here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/WET-AFTERNOON/10045263_kkXPE#688356610_Q2Tf2 Largely a new twist on some familiar sights, with the rain and Autumn colours creating some atmospheric images. This image was crying out for some "watercolour" treatment, so no apologies for two in a row. Several people have commented that they think these are HDRs, but in fact they are just manipulations of shadows/highlights and midtone contrast. The processing works best on grey days, with lots of details in the shot, like this.

Just before sunset I almost missed the clearance on the Western horizon, but I raced out into the rain again and caught a wonderful sunset and rainbow, which can be seen here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Landscapes/RAINBOW-SUNSET/10043633_xpdH9#688199348_4tbMF

So today wasn't such a washout after all :)
