This remarkably preserved log blockhouse was built in 1793, according to historians. There are several references to Fort Yargo as existing prior to 1800. Its location is given as three miles southwest of "Jug Tavern," original name for Winder.

Early historians say Fort Yargo was one of four forts built by Humphries Brothers to protect early white settlers from Indians. The other three forts were listed as at Talassee, Thomocoggan, now Jefferson, and Groaning Rock, now Commerce. (Text from Historic Marker)

Bodie State Historic Park is in Mono County, California. The old town of Bodie was established in 1876. It was named after William S. Bodey, who found a small amount of gold in the nearby hills in 1859. At Bodie's height, 8,500 people lived in the town, which included about 2,000 buildings. Today, Bodie is a ghost town, preserved in a state of "arrested decay". The town exists as it did when the last residents left. The interiors are maintained as they were left, still furnished and stocked with goods.
