Here's one I took yesterday, Sunday the 24th, which was the second hottest day on record for this time of year (last month of spring) in Sydney. The temperature reached 40 degrees C, and even after 6 pm when I took this, it was still uncomfortably hot. Thankfully, a cool change has meant that it only reached about 20 degrees C today.

I only ended up keeping two shots from the large number I took, and this is the one I like best. These were all taken quickly, and sometimes from the hip. You can see the other photo here:

We had a sunny day today after many days of dull weather with uninteresting light, so I took the opportunity and went into the city to photograph in the streets.

I immediately came across this musician, who played his instrument with wonderful control, and sang at the same time in a very unusual style, making his voice sound rather like another instrument. I wanted to ask him where he was from, but the song just kept going and going... Perhaps I'll see him again another day.

I did take close up portraits of him, too, but ended up discarding all of these, as I found them much less interesting than this one, where he's part of the street scene.

You'll see from the EXIF information that I've used my old Canon 350D here. Although I really like my 40D, I've been going out lately with the 350D and its original kit lens round my neck because it's so compact and light. It's perfect for when I know I'll do a lot of walking. I had the 40D with a Canon 70-300 mm zoom partof the time in my backpack and the rest of the time on my shoulder.

This lens did not get very good reviews when it came out. From the results I've been getting with it, it's either been very underrated or I've got a particularly good copy. (Yesterday's shot was taken with the same camera/lens combination, too.)

What it lacks though is image stabilization, as it's the old model, so I'm planning to get the newer stabilized version shortly. It's incredibly cheap and actually scores better in resolution tests than the next up in price short stabilized APS-C format zoom in the Canon range, although the latter has much better build quality.

The 350D with its 8 megapixels may be old now, but it stands up vey well in image quality when compared to the 40D.

As you can see, the brightness range here was enormous, but the 350D did really well shooting in RAW, with the file processed in Adobe RAW (Photoshop CS3). There is a bit of noise in the shadows here, due to having to keep the exposure level down in the RAW processing to not burn all the highlights out. I then had to bring out rather too much from the shadow area to show the musician's face well enough. Beats blank highlights for me any day, though.

Here's a new photo taken from the roadway above my local beach. I was lucky to just be down there when these school children were on an excursion. This has transformed the scene enough for me find it worthwhile photographing it yet again.
