Series: The Streets of Shanghai

As Maggie and I meandered our way through the teeming hive of activities, laying deep within these back streets and alleys, I noticed this interesting man, preparing a load of bananas on the back of his bicycle. On raising my camera, he immediately raised his hand, and I didn't know if it was a greeting or an instruction not to take the photograph. we didn't stop to find out and carried on our journey through this fascinating and magical passageway. In looking at this image many times, I've come to the conclusion, he was acknowledging our presence, somewhat cautiously, but greeting us, in a formal and commanding way. I recognize the purpose in his face and I have to say, this man has my attention and he has my respect!

More candid street photography as Maggie and I spent 6 hours driving and walking through the very soul of the city. This gentleman was so concentrated on reading his newspaper, he didn't even see me. The incredible thing is, this was early Saturday morning and the streets were filled with people but I never saw one person idle. Everyone was doing something! An incredible place and I have to say, incredible people!

Series: The Streets of Shanghai

This is Maggie. The same girl from Shanghai behind, in a completely different place at a different time. The shot of her in the street from behind was not a random shot of a stranger walking down the street pursued by some photographer pervert with a long lens. The photograph was a tasteful depiction of a beautiful young lady, dressed completely suitably and walking down a very interesting street, so typical of Shanghai. The title Shanghai Behind is an obvious play on words, and hardly offensive in any way.

A huge thanks to so many of you for your kind and thoughtful comments and emails yesterday. Today, an image on a much lighter note, a bit of a break from the darkness!
