I went into town this evening to get some more shots of the Christmas lights. I walked back up Steep Hill and took a few shots around the Jews House, the building on the left. It was built in the 12th century and is the oldest domestic building in the UK, possibly Europe. With the Cathedral just poking above the trees on the hill I thought sepia worked well with this. I had a bit of luck with the positioning of the girls as they walked past the light.

I've always loved night photography, but for years (decades actually!) I hated street photography. But in the last couple of years I've learned to love night street photography. As a photographer you seem less conspicuous, and if anyone questions why you were taking a photo of them, you can genuinely tell them that they will be hard to recognise. I love playing with shutter speeds, but even on "auto" you get some wonderful effects at night. Definitely another "something" that every photographer should try a lot more of :)
SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 14.11.09 - Look Up

I've taken so many photos from this viewpoint, but this is the first time I've turned the camera on it's side and included the sky in the shot! I was taking photos up round the Castle and Cathedral this evening, trying to find a different perspective, then I noticed the sky. The clouds were moving across like smoke, lit by the floodlights and the trees were swaying overhead. People were all wrapped up against the wind and were shuffling along without taking notice of their surroundings. I think I was the only person who noticed the clouds!
SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 9.11.09 - Fog Lights

Today has been a beautiful one, fantastic weather, nice sunset, but the fog tonight was an extra surprise. When I came off the squash court at about 9.30pm I was hardly dressed for photography in near freezing fog, but I've been waiting too long for some fog to waste this opportunity. So instead of going home for a hot shower I drove straight to the Cathedral Quarter looking for photo opps! Needless to say I was the only person in shorts!!

I got a few good shots of the fog and the golden glow from the Cathedral floodlights, but this one was a real stroke of luck. This is one of my favourite shooting positions, but for 10 minutes I froze waiting for someone to come along and be a "ghost" for me. So I wandered around for a while, and was on my way back to the car when I spotted these two guys heading for my spot. I raced ahead of them (you see the shorts were useful!) and fired 3 quick shots as they approached. One was out of focus, one had lousy comp, but this one turned out OK I think. Straight out of camera, not even a crop, just a touch of in camera sharpening and low light noise reduction. This is a beautiful spot, but when the fog descends it becomes utterly surreal. I'm one photog hoping for more fog this winter :)

Thanks for the great response to my model railway shots, you guys blow me away!
SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 24.10.09 - A Walk in the Park

We've had another of those strange days, with on and off rain until late afternoon, then a sudden clearance and beautiful weather to finish the day. Having dodged the rain in town all morning, I thought I deserved a walk in the park once the sun came out. I went down to Hartsholme and Swanholme and shot off about 100 photos, some of which are here; http://johnloguk.smugmug.com/gallery/5965117_7hV9D#691213196_QUw74

and here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Nature/HARTSHOLME-COUNTRY-PARK/6221276_jhJTP#691140151_ZGi8E

I was agonising over choosing a Daily, then thought that this image was the stand out shot of the day. Things fell into place once I added the sepia filter and frame, I hope you like it as much as I do.
SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 21.10.09 - Slippery When Wet

Today was wet and miserable, I should have checked the weather forecast before I decided to take it off! But, nothing ventured nothing gained, and when I did pick up my camera in the afternoon I had a pretty good photo walk despite the rain. The full gallery is here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/WET-AFTERNOON/10045263_kkXPE#688356610_Q2Tf2 Largely a new twist on some familiar sights, with the rain and Autumn colours creating some atmospheric images. This image was crying out for some "watercolour" treatment, so no apologies for two in a row. Several people have commented that they think these are HDRs, but in fact they are just manipulations of shadows/highlights and midtone contrast. The processing works best on grey days, with lots of details in the shot, like this.

Just before sunset I almost missed the clearance on the Western horizon, but I raced out into the rain again and caught a wonderful sunset and rainbow, which can be seen here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Landscapes/RAINBOW-SUNSET/10043633_xpdH9#688199348_4tbMF

So today wasn't such a washout after all :)

SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 18.10.09 - Planet Lurve :)

This planet was born out of desperation this evening. I've been busy with the kids all day, indoor camping, outdoor archery, Christmas card making (yes, really!) and everything in between! This is obviously a re-working of one of last night's shots, so apologies for something very similar to yesterday's Daily, but I think this works quite well. I love making planets, but they are a bit of a cliche so I don't want to overdo them.
SmugMug > keywords > walkers > 17.10.09 - Dusk Walkers

I didn't intend another monochrome, but after a long and frustrating day I took a short photo walk at dusk, and this treatment really seemed to suit the image. This is one of my favourite places for photography, by the north-east corner of the Cathedral, and it has featured as a Daily at least twice before. I love it at dusk when the lights have come on, but there is still some colour in the sky. You wouldn't believe there is a road off to the left and traffic lights at my back. You don't have to wait long for people to walk into the image and give it human interest either.

Apologies for minimal commenting yet again, but I seem to be in a permanent state of rushing about and high stress at the moment
