McCain (DDG 56) Feb. 8, 2002 --  A standard missile launches from the ships forward missile mount to intercept an incoming "hostile" target drone.  Nine U.S. Navy ships took part in missile exercise (MISSILEX) 02-1, an anti-ship missile defense training evolution, as part of a Commander Task Force Seven Five (CTF 75) Multi-Sail battle group interoperability exercise. Pacific Ocean (Aug. 9, 2003) -- The guided missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) fires a five-inch round from a Mk-45 5-inch gun (5" 54 cal.) during a live-fire exercise.  The Mk-45 is a lightweight gun providing surface combatants accurate naval gunfire against fast, highly maneuverable, surface targets, air threats and shore batteries during amphibious operations.
