Harper's Ferry West Virginia, site Of The John Brown Raid In 1859, this shot taken from the Maryland Heights overlook, to the left is Loudoun Heights Virginia, sitting between Maryland & Virginia at the convergence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers Harper's Ferry witnessed the civil war with a view from both sides. Maryland Heights was the scene of the first battle between Union and Confederate troops in Maryland and which was the first action between the two forces on Northern soil. Maryland Heights was the most crucial strategic target for the Confederate army during the Battle of Harpers Ferry September 12-15, 1862
