Bleached blonde beech leaves DP104-2-13 Posted April 14; processed ditto. Young beech trees form part of the understory in many mixed hardwood forests in SE Michigan. Over the winter the leaves, which are retained even more tenaciously than oak leaves, lose their color. Because the young beeches send their branches out nearly horizontally, much like dogwoods, at a distance, a woods full of young beeches bears a startling resemblance to a woods full of wild dogwood in bloom at this time of year.
