Boxing. I spectated.
Crystal Lake

Hello! You’re standing on the shore of Tarn Hows in the Lake District.

It was Boxing Day, so me and Lisabet decided to hike around this extremely picturesque lake. I mean, why wouldn’t you?

Those interested in the language of the area of Cumbria may have paid attention to the fact that this particular lake doesn’t use the word “mere” (like “Windermere”) but “tarn”. The word comes from Old Norse tjörn meaning “pond” and these days tends to denote any smaller pond or lake of altitude in the North of England.

Tarn Hows was originally three lakes: low tarn, middle tarn and high tarn. It wasn’t until Leeds MP James Garth Marshall gained full possession of the land in 1862 and started making some landscape improvements, resulting in the one, single lake millions of people now enjoy every year.

It’s a seriously beautiful place, even in winter. =)
