One mile west of Tillamook Head, "Terrible Tilly", Tillamook Rock Lighthouse rises 100' from the ocean. The lighthouse, established in 1881, is one of the most exposed lighthouse structures in the world. Because of the high cost and difficulty of maintenance, it was decommissioned in 1957. Recently, Tillamook Rock Lighthouse served as a columbarium, which the owners hoped would provide sustainable funds to maintain this historic landmark. Currently, this project is on hold until repairs to the structure can be made. The lighthouse is best viewed from Ecola State Park with excellent views from the trails.
