Ruined and Abandoned
04 December 2013 -- 338/365
Providence, Rhode Island
I was driving home from Federal Hill this afternoon and I spotted this ruined mill complex. It had everything I like in an old abandoned mill property: broken windows, a rusty old fire escape, weathered texture on the doors, and outstanding contrast on the brickwork. The sky pattern helped as well. When I was a kid, this was part of the Uniroyal Rubber Company complex. While it's never good to see industry move out of the state, I don't think there was anyone within twenty miles of the place that was sorry to see Uniroyal shut down. The stench from the vulcanization of rubber is overpowering, and when the wind was right - and it often was - you could smell it throughout the state. It made you long for the sweet smell of low-tide in Narragansett Bay.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, protect highlights, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
