Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania
This statue depicts Gouverneur K. Warren, a Union general and civil engineer, surveying the Gettysburg battlefield from Little Round Top on July 2, 1863. What he saw was an advancing Confederate army about to outflank the Federals; his call for reinforcements saved the day, the battle, and probably the Civil War. The following day, Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia attacked across the field on the upper left and was repulsed in what became known as Pickett's Charge.
I have spent days exploring the battlefield and town; this photo from April 29, 2005 is my favorite.
