March 20 2013 Immigration
Yesterday we went to Ellis Island Day at Lindsey's school. The gym was set up with stations such as those that would have been at Ellis Island during the late 1800's and early 1900's. Each third grader was dresed up as and carried the paperwork for an immigrant. Lindsey played the role of a 16 year old immigrant from France. The student made their way through all of the various stations, medical, passport, name change and so on. When they were all done they were welcomed to the United States and all said the pledge of allegiance.
I put together this collage of Lindsey going through the stations and standing next to her poster. She interviewed me for the project so I've got another picture there of her standing next to a picture she drew of me and a short article she wrote with the facts from our interview. It was a fun day for all of us.
(I'm Irish, Welsh, English and French. Lindsey was going to do Ireland but too many kids in her class were doing that so she switched to France.)
