In the photography world, these occurences of the sun breaking through the clouds are called several things, but usually I hear them referred to as "God Rays". This is the first time I've had the opportunity to photograph the phenomenon, but it was quite spectacular. They only last a minute in one spot usually before they're gone, so I'm fortunate to have captured this one right over Alcatraz.

Blue Sea

While wandering through the island of Malta, one can feel a little bit lost at a time. Indeed, although Malta is one of the most densely populated countries worldwide, there are places where there is just nothing… at all. No souls, no vegetation, just sand and stones. And suddenly, a few hundred meters further, there are groups of a dozen houses with everything people – mostly tourists – may need, from cold drinks to sandwiches and from t-shirts to camera batteries.

Today’s picture was taken while reaching the Blue Grotto, one of the most famous spots of the main island of Malta, where natural caves were bored in the cliffs over time.
A Venetian Sunrise

A winter sunrise over the Basino di San Marco and the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore taken from the Piazzetta, just next to the Palazzo Ducale (the Doge’s Palace). Fortunately, at that time of the year the sun rises at around 7 AM and my hotel was just at a two minutes’ walk from Saint Mark’s Place so I didn’t need to wake up earlier than 6:30 AM to get that image.

Although everything may look pretty quiet, the Piazzetta is rather crowded already at sunrise during the Carnival, mostly by people posing with their stunning disguises for dozens of photographers like myself :-)
