Ephemeral. Splash zone ice. DP042-2013. Posted February 11; processed ditto. (See a cropped version as per Judy's suggestion here: http://smu.gs/Y8EyWA) Nothing is more ephemeral, or more varied in its forms, than ice that forms on all the surfaces along the river banks or on structures in contact with the river, in what I call the splash zone. This is anywhere the surging, churning water can reach, but reach only intermittently, either in bulk or as splash or spray. On a recent visit to the Dixboro Road Bridge and Geddes Dam I found all of the surfaces in the splash zone had been decorated either with a fringe of icicles or a coating of smooth bubble-like forms which resembled mammatus clouds. This example shows small icicles that formed near the base of concrete bridge support pillars. They're not the largest or most spectacular of the ice forms I saw that day, but I liked the picture for other aspects, such as the rolling water surface, the warm colors, the reflections of the pillar, and the unlikely (to me) location of the icicles which are clinging like limpets to a vertical surface.
