Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
One of the walls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, visible from one of the Calcite Springs Trail overlooks. It has a layer of basalt with columnar jointing almost at the top of the cliff. There are also layers of a bluish color, which I think may be carbonate copper sulphate. Any of you geologists out there know what they are? Best viewed in the largest sizes to see all these things.
This is the view from one of the Calcite Springs Trail overlooks. This shows the Yellowstone River and the cliff of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. At the top of the cliff is a layer of basalt that displays columnar jointing. Further down you see some layers of bluish rock that looks like copper. As the canyon opens up, you see the Lamar Valley and mountains beyond. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
