Aarti, 19, and Sanjay, 21. They were rescued by the Love Commandos, a volunteer force rescuing young lovers from families and village councils who are determined to keep them apart.
The couple's families lived across the street from each other in Agra. They would talk to each other across the rooftops every evening. But Aarti's mother disapproved of the match, because Sanjay comes from a lower caste. She tried to sell her daughter off three times before Sanjay called the Love Commandos for help. They helped the couple reach Delhi and are keeping them in a safehouse to protect them from Aarti's family. They are pictured through the air vent in the bedroom.
The Love Commandos were formed in response to a wave of honour killings in India in the summer of 2010. many of those they help have been barred from marriage because they come from different castes. The army of 2,000 volunteers operates a 24 hour hotline offering legal advice and, where necessary, physical intervention to keep the couples together. The headquarters of the operation is a small house in the backstreets of old Delhi.
