‘Cotton grass near Carloway.’

The plumes of common cottongrass cover the undulating landscape west of Carloway on the northern shore of the Isle of Lewis. The rounded forms of Lewis' rocks were formed by the scouring action of glaciers during the ice ages. Photo Mick Palarczyk.

‘Broch of Dun Carloway.’

Surrounded by the white plumes of common cottongrass the broch of Dun Carloway on the northern shore of the Isle of Lewis catches the last rays of the setting sun. This broch was probably built in the 1st century BC. It has a hollow wall with the remains of a staircase inside. Brochs were tower-like buildings and may have had defensive purposes, but their exact function is still unclear. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
