Freedom Hangs Like Heaven
This statue has been erected, appropriately, in front of the Texas Capitol in Austin. Forever frozen in a free-wheeling, hat-holding horse-rearing, it is an immortally idealized image of the freedom and individuality that we Americans love to culturally enshrine in the archetype of the cowboy. Yet, like most statues--going back to the divine delts and superhuman abs chiseled out of marble by the Greek versions of photo retouchers, it represents an abstracted perfection totally unattainable to any actual human being. In this case, it's complete freedom. Also like most statues, this symbol of freedom is completely unable to move.
