The deck of the barge was thick with ice, although there were a few bare spots. You can see the Mountain-Volcanoes of the Alaska Range in the distance. The Tide was ebbing toward 28 feet from its recent low of 5 feet (in 6 hours), so the water was moving rapidly and strongly, carrying large and small ice floes with it.
We went under the vehicle barrier and walked to the end of the pier to the edge of the barge, where we entered the cage you can see at the end of the cable held by the crane.
