Crimson backed tanagers are among the more common of the tanager species in Panama. I saw them several times during my stay in Panama but I found them so beautiful that I never passed up the chance to take their picture. This photo is of a male which is distinguished from the female by the silver lower mandible and a more reddish colour to the head and back (females are more reddish brown in this area).
Although relatively common in Panama these guys have a fairly small range and are restricted to the lowlands and valleys of northern Colombia, northwestern Venezuela, and Panama.
