Two Spanish state vessels monitor exercise from within Gibraltar waters
Gibraltar - 30th September 2015 - The Government of Gibraltar are looking into a possible incursion by both a Spanish naval vessel and a Spanish survey vessel into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters during a joint exercise by Gibraltar based law enforcement maritime assets and UK Border Force vessels.
Images taken between 0800hrs and 1000hrs show how the Spanish state vessels navigated between rows of tankers anchored off the eastside of the Rock of Gibraltar, the area known as the eastside anchorage is between one mile and two miles offshore and well within the demarcated British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
A Government spokesman limited himself to saying "‘The evidence available to the Government at the moment is that the Guardia Civil ‘Rio Sedeno’ vessel was in and around the border of BGTW on the eastern side of the Rock and that the Spanish warship ‘Medas’ was on the water all morning but outside BGTW. The indications are that Medas was clearly monitoring the exercise.’
The Spanish vessels were also not showing on ship tracking monitoring services and are believed to have had their tracking devices disabled during the two hours they were observed in the area.
