John Frost Bridge, Arnhem, province of Gelderland, the Netherlands (Nederland). During World War II the allies failed to capture this river crossing in the huge 1944 offensive called Operation Market Garden. Only the British batallion of Lt. Col. John Frost managed to reach the northern side of the bridge. However, the marching allied ground forces from the south, which were meant to reinforce and relief, his unit came to late while he faced a heavy German counter-attack. Cornelius Ryan dramatised the events in the 1974 book A bridge too far, which was put into film by Richard Attenborough in 1976. He used the IJssel bridge in nearby Deventer as set instead, since not much of the original situation of 1944 was left after the destruction and the following rebuilding of the Arnhem city centre and bridge. The current bridge of 1948 - in the same style as the old one - was named after John Frost in 1978.
