Marble Dome10 February 2013 -- 41/365Providence, Rhode IslandMy Sunday Brunch meetup group went to the Cheesecake Factory in Providence Place Mall today. (Yeah, there's snow out there, but we still have to eat, right?) Walking out after brunch, I spotted this scene of the Rhode Island State House, brilliantly sun-lit behind these picturesque bare trees. For some reason, I find bare trees to be more photogenic than their full-foliage summer selves. Of course, my camera was in my car, which was parked on the other side of the mall. It was worth the walk there and back for this shot, though. An interesting bit of trivia about the State House is that it is the fourth largest free standing marble dome in the world. Only the Taj Mahal, the Minnesota State Capital, and St. Peter's Basilica are larger. The building has been in several movies due to its resemblance to the US Capital. It appeared in Armistad representing the US Capital, and it was in Underdog representing the "City Hall of Capital City".Post processing started with a standard grey scale conversion in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.

Day 40/365

Today while the kids were playing in the snow I decided to venture out for a few minutes to mess around with the settings on my Canon and get used to using it in the bright, natural outdoor light. I switched to the shutter speed priority setting and set it to the highest speed possible to try to get a good still shot of a water droplet falling from one of these icicles...and to my pleasant surprise, it worked!!!!!! Too bad I wasn't zoomed in more. If you click to view the extra large sizes of the pic, you can see the droplet much better. So happy I got this :) Maybe I'll try again tomorrow and zoom in more...

Aftermath09 February 2013 -- 40/365North Providence, Rhode IslandThere was still a light snow falling when I set out for some photos this morning. I walked a 2.5 mile loop from my house, capturing scenes along the way. Only 2 of the streets were plowed, so it was a challenging workout. Unofficially, we got about 20 inches of snow. It's hard to judge since there were some very deep drifts, but that was about the consistent depth I saw as folks shoveled their walks. We lost power at 8:09 PM last night, and it was finally restored at 6:10 tonight. The temperature was dropping fast, and the forecast was for single digits tonight, so the folks still without power are in for a very cold evening.Today's photo shows someone on Smithfield Road using a snowblower to clear his driveway. The snow is almost up to his waist, so that should give you some idea as to what fell overnight. I was asked by several younger folks along the way if this storm was worse than the Blizzard of '78. My answer was a consistent "absolutely not." In '78, it snowed for 36 hours, dropping between 29 and 40 inches of snow throughout the state. Plus, it was HEAVY snow! It took me three days to clear my driveway in '78 because it was like shoveling concrete. The one difference, though, is that we never lost power in '78. Losing power in every storm is a new phenomenon here, and is directly tied to the acquisition of Narragansett Electric by National Grid. Service has declined and rates have continued to spiral upward to the point where we now have the second highest power costs in the nation. (Only Southern California has higher costs according to a properties study we recently completed.)Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, boost white, protect highlights, and contrast. A sepia photo filter was added in PSE.

"No Lights Today"

We were at the soccer field for Sutton's game today and I looked up and thought these lights might make a neat daily. So here it is. It falls under pattern, line, circles and such categories. Amazing how close you can get with a zoom.

Hope your weekend is going well. The sky is blue and wind is chilled here.
Thanks for your comments and critiques.

Day 39/365

Not too bad for a shot taken through a window :) It was just way too cold to go outside! Anyway, the HUGE snowstorm turned out to be pretty wimpy (at least in Buffalo that is). We got a few inches, but I heard Boston is getting three feet....yuck.
