The Brazen Serpent
The Old Testament pendentives show how the Israelites were rescued from extremely dire distress: On the long journey from Egypt to the Promised Land, the people of Israel began to rebel against God. He responded by sending poisonous serpent as punishment. Michelangelo depicts the battle with the serpents as a dramatic spectacle of writhing bodies. The left-hand side of the painting shows the faithful Israelites looking at a bronze sculpture of a serpent in order to be saved from the punishment.
