Firefighters from Highlandtown and Wellsville extricated Nicole Zernich of Lisbon after a single-car rollover crash on state Route 39 just east of Bill Smith Road in Yellow Creek Township Tuesday evening. Zernich was airlifted from the scene by Air Evac and taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with undisclosed injuries. Trooper Joy Bolen of the highway patrol is investigating the crash in which the westbound vehicle went off the right side of the road and overturned, coming to rest on the its roof. Columbiana and Leetonia fire departments responded to a large fire at Zarbana Industries on Easterly Road in Columbiana shortly before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Workers at neighboring Buckeye Transfer reported hearing what sounded like a truck hitting the building and then, upon looking at the structure, saw the north wall bow out followed by fire breaking through the siding in the press area of the plant. A trucker picking up sand at Buckeye Transfer called 911. Columbiana Fire Department was still at the scene late Thursday. Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer

East Palestine firefighter Zack Gorby battles a blaze on Carbon Hill Road. A man lost his home in a fire Tuesday afternoon that kept firefighters busy most of the day and into the evening.
D. Scott Wallace, his girlfriend Patti Fowler and his dog were able to escape the blaze at 6607 Carbon Hill Road and were not injured, Negley fire captain Beverly Shell said. Morning Journal/Patti Schaeffer
