New York City Skyline at Sunset - Lower Manhattan Skyscrapers - By Vivienne Gucwa

New York City is magical

during the pause between night and day

when the sun dips behind the skyline

shining its light out through the twinkling eyes of the buildings.

This time of day is when

dreams roll off the tongue,

with a slow-motion exhale

at the end of a word

in a phrase

that trails off

without end.

Winter in New York City isn't the friendliest especially near the water when the wind-chills dip into the single digits and the wind whips across the waves. This is the result of a 30 second long exposure taken last night with the Sony a99 after a long-walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. The view is of the skyscrapers of the Financial District in lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty can be seen fading into the sun-streaked horizon. I have always loved the way the skyscrapers in this view just sort of abruptly break up the more open view on the left.

I love the moments just after sunset. The sky sinks into a momentary pause before the night sky pulls itself over the city. When everything is devoid of color on cloudy days, the tiny bits of color during these moments that come from the lights in the skyscrapers and the color that streaks across the bone-chilled-grey sky reach right into the heart.

I've been experimenting with different ways of photographing icicles. To produce this result I did nothing more than turn on the outside entry lights at our front door and illuminate some icicles that had formed just a little to one side of those lights. This was just at dusk, when there was still some background light. I was shooting 'outward' from the porch, i.e. the illumination was coming from behind me. The glow you see in the icicles hasn't been Photoshopped in; nor did I selectively brighten the icicles and darken the background. What you see here is pretty much what I saw with my naked eye.

THE FIRST SHOTS
The picture above was taken in Hong Kong harbour. I was staying on deck, it was in twilight in the evening, our vessel was moving while to anchor. Far away we could see the skyline from Hong Kong on this hot and steamy day. Then, for a short while the sun came out a little bit....

I made that shot, using a 200mm zoom and Fuji SP-3000 film, ISO 200.... Never expected this image could turn out to something useful.... Guess having "luck" (or making your luck) and getting all together in the right moment, that is what photography is actually about.
THE FIRST SHOTS
Just some days before I started to work on a container feeder vessel I bought my first SLR camera. I boarded in Shanghai and our first port of call was Hong Kong.
THE FIRST SHOTS
I was using every free minute I could find to shot some pictures and trying all my new gear..... The shot above was taken with 200mm zoom. The guy staying there was in charge for operating the winches for the cargo gear used to discharge and load containers from our vessel to a barge alongside.
THE FIRST SHOTS
Delivery service? Yes, we got that! Bargainer coming alongside and selling fruits, vegetables, clothes.... Even many seaman do not intend to buy something, it is an indeed welcome change from the daily board routine and really everyone on board will go to see what the chandlers in their boats are offering.
