We had been trying to catch eagles in our viewfinder all afternoon. We found 4 adults and a juvenile near the Chilkoot Lake. It was about 40 minutes after happily snapping photos of eagles that we saw Mama Merganzer and her babies. It was only during post-processing that I decided to do a little forensic analysis on the eagle photos to see if there was any duck drama there. The five photos at the bottom were heavily zoomed in (after captured with 45-175 mm lens). It's hard to tell whether a baby duck is in the claws of photo 2. We may never know. But photo 5 shows a baby duck diving, and shortly after that, the eagles aborted that hunt. I have learned that eagles will dive bomb ducks until the tire before swooping them up for a snack.
