© Joseph Dougherty. All rights reserved. Final completed Star of Life, with Rod of Asclepias, on my inner right wrist. The blue Star of Life represents emergency medical care. The snake emblem is the Rod of Asclepius, one of two widely used symbols of medical care. The other, the winged caduceus, is often used to represent Medicine and medical practice, but in the ancient Greek world was actually associated with Hermes and thus was a symbol of commerce. The Rod of Asclepius was a traditional Greek symbol of medicine, and today is more closely aligned with the surgical arts.
Nearly done... just a few finishing touches left to go... I have to say -- of all the tattoos I've gotten so far, this one was by far the worst with regard to pain. I never take any pain medicine ahead of time, or put any numbing creams on my skin... but if I ever have to get this one touched up or recolored, I might consider it.
