If you're going to shoot the sunrise, you need to wake up early.  Always plan to be on location at least 45 minutes early.
On Saturday, Rick and I met at 6:15 AM, knowing that the sun would rise at 6:58 that day. As it turned out, we probably should have been down on the beach by 6:15.  My first shot that morning (see below) was taken at 6:25, more than 30 minutes before the sun would rise. That shot was a 30 second exposure.  I did not need to use a neutral density filter because it was still very dark, much darker than the final image would suggest.
You may think that things are too dark when you first get to a location and want to wait for the sun to rise. But take some images using a long exposure and see how they turn out. It may surprise you. The last thing you want to do is wait around for the light to improve, only to find out that you missed the best light of the day. From www.OutofChicago.com
