"Natty Bears and the Pic-a-nic Basket", sponsored by Eureka Natural Foods, makes an odd but pleasingly familiar sight for a bright blue spring day. The wine and food basket, complete with ants, seemed to float over cow fields before finally making it to Ferndale to finish the race. The third day of the "Ruby" 40th annual Kinetic Grand Championship concluded under sunny skies at the annual finish line at Main and Brown Streets in Ferndale. Thousands of cheering and gaily dressed spectators watched human-powered kinetic art sculptures finish the grueling race after they crossed the Eel River, made cows on the Ferndale bottoms roads moo with delight and finally entered Main Street Ferndale a little haggard, yet in high spirits after enduring mud, sand, brackish bay water for three days.
